Huerco S. + DJ Healthy

West Mineral label guru Brian Leeds wears many weird hats as Pendant, Royal Crown of Sweden, Loidis, and, most notably, Huerco S. His welcome return to The Sound Room reminds us that our “club” experiences need not be conventional. Sometimes we need to get weird and Leeds is our essential guide. Joining for the night is Brooklyn's own DJ Healthy.

Teen Daze Album Release Party

Enter Interior. An ode to electric futures glimpsed in ecstatic heights, from bedrooms to big rooms, it’s an album of first loves refracted through prisms of wisdom, wounds, and wonder. Filter house and flashing lights; soft acid and vaporous neon; bumping clubs in spiral towers: “Like what the teenagers in Akira might be listening to.” For the album release party, British Columbia producer Jamison Isaak will be joined by Sam OB + Rowan Spencer in The Sound Room.

Satoshi Tomiie Open to Close

Not many producers in electronic music have had a history as storied as Satoshi Tommiie. A lifelong student of jazz and classical piano, Satoshi had an influential impact from his very first record. His debut single ‘Tears’, which he co-produced in 1989 with Chicago’s ‘Godfather of house’ Frankie Knuckles, was an instant club hit and is today considered one of house music’s most important moments. Since then, Satoshi has moved effortlessly between genres with countless hits. Now, returning to his underground roots, Satoshi comes to the sound room for an open to close affair, digging deep into his collection to give us a groove for the ages as we near the end of 2021.

Faten Kanaan
w/ Supruli Trio

Syrian-Palestinian-Jordanian-Lebanese, b. Walsrode, Germany. Brooklyn-based composer / producer Faten Kanaan layers cyclical patterns in her music, using harmony + counterpoint as narrative tools. Sound + silence become intuitive gestures that tell a wordless story and share metaphysical connections. Inspired by cinematic forms and literary story structures: from sweeping landscapes + quiet romances, to patterned tensions + dream sequences; she focuses on bringing an earthy, visceral touch to electronic music.

David Grubbs + Ryley Walker A Tap on the Shoulder Album Release
w/ Amirtha Kidambi and Amirtha Kidambi

With this show David Grubbs and Ryley Walker celebrate the release of A Tap on the Shoulder (Husky Pants), their first duo album. The two had been taking notes on one another’s playing for some time before they hit the stage together on a couple of blistering occasions immediately pre-pandemic. A Tap on the Shoulder veers from crystalline instrumental compositions to animated alien chatterfests, and from ecstatic extrapolations charging this way and that to, I don’t know, words don’t do the trick. Don’t think for a second that these shorthand descriptions suffice. Electric guitars make electronic music.

duendita / KUMBAYA

After an appearance on PRTV in 2020, duendita makes their irl debut in The Sound Room.

duendita is an artist hailing from Queens, New York. They write and produce their own music, imbuing it with a reverence for their ancestry and faith, carried by the airy nostalgia of their vocals. With their achy, bass-coated tones and mix of jazz, piano, soul, + R&B, duendita’s music is evocative of the complexities and sentimentality of the human experience.

CARM
w/ Ade

CARM is the debut self-titled album of multi-instrumentalist, producer, and arranger CJ Camerieri. Whether it’s playing the iconic piccolo trumpet solo on Paul Simon’s “The Boxer”; anthemic horn parts on songs like The National’s “Fake Empire,” Sufjan Stevens’ “Chicago,” or Bon Iver’s “For Emma, Forever Ago”; performing with his contemporary classical ensemble yMusic; or recording lush beds of french horns for artists from John Legend to The Tallest Man on Earth, you have very likely heard Camerieri play. Camerieri joins us live in The Sound Room with New York singer-songwriter Ade.

Ouri

Ouri grew up in France, in a family of mixed French and Afro-Caribbean descent. She began playing the harp and piano at 5, but at 7 she found unity in the cello. A self proclaimed introvert who’d rather dash off on her own than feel disconnected in the wrong crowd — she arrives in Montreal at the age of 16 to pursue a degree in composition. Montreal’s rave scene is where her artistry began to take shape — establishing herself in the community as a producer, DJ, and composer. Lending her skills to various collaborations, she strengthened her sense of self, but also her affinity for transforming sonically into any genre, playing any role. She takes her knowledge of big orchestral sound, and creates her own fusion, puncturing the classical with industrial abrasions and electronic nuance. Ballads and drum samples take melodies out of the middle ground. She finds home in the new hybrid — but first she must stretch the old structure to make a clearing. Conscious not to define herself within any one structure, but to cascade her own spectrum of sound — in Frame of a Fauna Ouri shows us everything she can do, while what comes next is everything she will.
