Spoonerism presents: Punjabi Disco Listening Session with Kuljit Bhamra and Naya Beat

Tickets

Punjabi Disco is the first-ever British-Asian electronic dance album recorded—released in the same year as Charinjit Singh’s classic Ten Ragas To A Disco Beat. A groundbreaking amalgam of disco, acid house, and Punjabi folk melodies by the OG West London vocalist Mohinder Kaur Bhamra, it’s a quietly revolutionary LP that has long been unknown and inaccessible to even the deepest of diggers. Over 40 years after its initial limited release, our friends at the LA-based archival label Naya Beat have brought Punjabi Disco back to life for the proper reception it deserves.

‌Punjabi Disco was produced by Mohinder’s eldest son and the legendary bhangra pioneer Kuljit Bhamra. For the reissue, Naya Beat founders Turbotito & Ragz brought together the past and the present by pairing the remastered original studio recordings with new interpretations by Peaking Lights, Danger Boys, Psychemagik, Dexter+Franz, Mystic Jungle, Baalti, and Say She She’s Piya Malik. The release was named The Guardian’s “Global Album of the Month”, and has been praised by BBC, DJ Mag, Mixmag, and In Sheep’s Clothing among other publications.

Kuljit Bhamra and Naya Beat will sit in conversation with celebrated South Asian music journalist Vrinda Jagota [Pitchfork, Taste, LA Review of Books] for a Q&A and listening session at Public Records’ Upstairs this Saturday, November 15th from 4-6 PM. The conversation will be archived and released on Spoonerism’s monthly radio show on Half Moon BK. Copies of Punjabi Disco will be available for purchase as well.
