greyfade is a new-york based record label focused on contemporary experimental music: process-based works, acoustic & electronic minimalism, algorithmic composition, and alternate tuning systems.
As part of Bang on a Can’s LONGPLAY festival, greyfade presents three artists from its label roster in an immersive and otherworldly afternoon concert.
Greyfade label head Joseph Branciforte performs an intimate duo set with sound artist Taylor Deupree. Branciforte and Deupree share a fascination with process-based sound sculpting, both acoustic & electronically mediated. They perform on Wurlitzer, vibraphone, tape processing, and electronics.
Vermont-based electronic musician Greg Davis performs pieces from his recent greyfade recording New Primes, an investigation into the compositional properties of prime numbers. The work employs custom-written software to translate prime number sequences into a collection of pieces ranging from the almost-tonal to the harmonically alien.
Closing the concert is JACK Quartet, one of the most acclaimed and respected experimental string quartets performing today. They bring their trademark rigor and musical commitment to three intense works – rag’sma for string quartet and tape playback by their own violinist Christopher Otto (released on greyfade in 2021), Prisma Interius VII by Catherine Lamb, and — in honor of the hundredth anniversary of his birth — Iannis Xenakis’s scratchy masterpiece Tetras.
