Two Detroit-born artists join us in The Nursery for a lesson on the history of dance music.

Ash Lauryn — now Atlanta-based — stays true to her “Underground and Black” philosophy with a definitive ear for old-school house influenced by an early-raver upbringing. With a mix of Ron Trent, Kai Alcé, Patrice Scott, Underground Resistance, and Jeff Mills as musical foundations, it’s no surprise that Lauryn’s library is a deep well of almost-lost treasures from the ’80s and ’90s.

Another easy-to-see-why DJ — his mother, a professional singer, and his father, owner of a nightclub — Kyle Hall is known for his innovative take on house and techno. From experimental electronic productions released at age 11 to more recent releases on Hyperdub, Apron, and his own labels, Wild Oats and Forget The Clock, Hall has developed a style unique to his generation and true to his city’s legacy.
