Dee Diggs
w/ Baronhawk Poitier

Baronhawk Poitier is a DJ and music producer who is a well-known staple in the DC house, techno, and queer party scenes. He is bringing his impressive catalog of original music and dancefloor-ready remixes along with an inspiring range of musical tastes and DJ stylings to the decks at Public Records.

It’s not unlikely for Baronhawk to mix up some deep cut old school vogue B-sides, Ghetto House, and a James Brown track all in the same set.

Expect a Strictly Disco-centric first 3 hours of the party, a wintertime boogie requested by the resident, Dee Diggs. After that, no constraints, anything goes, and both DJs will play in a free-wielding way!

Come ready to keep that fire burning.🔥

CARM
w/ Ade

CARM is the debut self-titled album of multi-instrumentalist, producer, and arranger CJ Camerieri. Whether it’s playing the iconic piccolo trumpet solo on Paul Simon’s “The Boxer”; anthemic horn parts on songs like The National’s “Fake Empire,” Sufjan Stevens’ “Chicago,” or Bon Iver’s “For Emma, Forever Ago”; performing with his contemporary classical ensemble yMusic; or recording lush beds of french horns for artists from John Legend to The Tallest Man on Earth, you have very likely heard Camerieri play. Camerieri joins us live in The Sound Room with New York singer-songwriter Ade.

Razor-N-Tape pres. A Joyful Noise
w/ Underground System and Norman Vladimir

Razor-N-Tape presents A Joyful Noise, a new project integrating live performance into a club atmosphere. A collective of musicians led by JKriv craft a deep, groove-oriented live sound, seamlessly transitioning between DJ sets by Razor-N-Tape residents and guests. Fusing the spirit of collective jazz interplay with the ever-forward driving motion of a club night, the DJs and live performances will inform each other sonically and aesthetically, and play off each other. Each live set will begin with the band pulling from elements of the DJ's final track to develop and improvise a new musical direction, moving through sections of compositions and improvisations until the musical baton is passed back to the DJ, with a vibrant dancefloor maintained throughout.

duendita / KUMBAYA

After an appearance on PRTV in 2020, duendita makes their irl debut in The Sound Room.

duendita is an artist hailing from Queens, New York. They write and produce their own music, imbuing it with a reverence for their ancestry and faith, carried by the airy nostalgia of their vocals. With their achy, bass-coated tones and mix of jazz, piano, soul, + R&B, duendita’s music is evocative of the complexities and sentimentality of the human experience.

Macie Stewart

Macie Stewart started writing and recording music for her first solo albym Mouth Full of Glass about a year before quarantine with Dave Vettraino engineering and providing additional production, his instrumental ear being a key component in the mixing process. Stewart finished the record during the first months of the stay-at-home orders with Vivan McConnell (V.V. Lightbody) being her remote sounding board for ideas. “While I don’t consider this album a ‘quarantine record,’ finishing it during that time was important because I had to spend the most time with the person I had been avoiding: myself.”

The Blacksmiths Present: Behind the Groove

Featuring YahZarah St. James, Mal Sounds, Niama Sandy + more.

This event is part of Carnegie Hall’s Afrofuturism festival

Hosted + conceived by The Blacksmiths' co-founder, polymath artist and curator Niama Safia Sandy, Behind the Groove is a night of exploration of the dimensions of Black artistic forms.

We conceive the Groove as a protective and vital force in the Universe. It's a generative beacon for the Black creative impulse.

Accordingly, the event is a multidisciplinary engagement. It will reimagine Afrofuturism beyond a purely aesthetic position. Rather, it's an ambulatory cosmology ordering our very existence.

The night will feature a talk, selected short films and electrifying live performances by YahZarah St. James, Mal Sounds, and special guests!

Kampire + Sinistarr

This event is part of Carnegie Hall’s Afrofuturism festival

The language of the drum is a critical component of modern club music.

Drums call attention, induce movement and communicate patterns. Ugandan DJ Kampire is a sonic ambassador for East African electronic music. The Nyege Nyege affiliate performs one-of-a-kind DJ sets, fusing various genres of modern diasporic club music into joyous dance floor workouts.

Known for high speed rhythms, many genres from East Africa share the pulse and character of African American-born genres, such as juke, footwork, jit, and ghettotech. Sinistarr grew up hearing these sounds on his local Detroit radio stations, and fused them with the sonic palette of jungle and drum and bass.

Together, Sinistarr and Kampire will push timeless and contemporary rhythms born of the African diaspora.

Ouri

Ouri grew up in France, in a family of mixed French and Afro-Caribbean descent. She began playing the harp and piano at 5, but at 7 she found unity in the cello. A self proclaimed introvert who’d rather dash off on her own than feel disconnected in the wrong crowd — she arrives in Montreal at the age of 16 to pursue a degree in composition. Montreal’s rave scene is where her artistry began to take shape — establishing herself in the community as a producer, DJ, and composer. Lending her skills to various collaborations, she strengthened her sense of self, but also her affinity for transforming sonically into any genre, playing any role. She takes her knowledge of big orchestral sound, and creates her own fusion, puncturing the classical with industrial abrasions and electronic nuance. Ballads and drum samples take melodies out of the middle ground. She finds home in the new hybrid — but first she must stretch the old structure to make a clearing. Conscious not to define herself within any one structure, but to cascade her own spectrum of sound — in Frame of a Fauna Ouri shows us everything she can do, while what comes next is everything she will.
